In an eight player game they used two Dutch players, which seemed to work well. Having two of them would certainly make the game tighter all the way up to the very end. I think this could even work well in a six player game (three teams of two of each).

There's also the uneven distribution variant, where there are more cards than players, so you never know what the correct distribution or roles is; five players, six role cards, etc.

Providing players setting up the table with a few possibilities as to how to set the game up provides for a lot of replay value.
